A judge in Pamplona (northern Spain) rejected, this Tuesday (16), the complaint filed by the Spanish football league regarding racist insults directed at Brazilian striker Vinicius, from Real Madrid, during a Spanish Championship match against Osasuna , last year. According to the judge, it was not possible to determine the identity of the perpetrators.

The Spanish judge admitted that “the facts could constitute a crime,” according to an order cited in a press release from the Navarre Superior Court of Justice.

However, in his opinion, “there is insufficient information to know the identity of the authors” and “it is therefore appropriate to accept the dismissal of these proceedings”, adds the order, which can be appealed.

The insults directed at Real Madrid’s Brazilian striker were reported to the courts by the Spanish football league after the match against Osasuna, in the 22nd round of the Spanish Championship, on February 18, 2023, won by Real Madrid 2-0.

Racist chants and insults

The victim of racist chants and insults on several occasions since his arrival in Madrid in 2018, the Brazilian national team athlete has become a leader in the fight against discrimination in Spanish football.

In Madrid, prosecutors asked for four years in prison for four people accused of hanging a doll wearing a Vinicius shirt from a bridge in the capital before a Copa del Rey match a year ago.

The 23-year-old player also gave a statement to a judge in Valencia (360 km from the capital Madrid) last October as part of the investigation into insults he received during a Spanish Championship match on May 21, 2023.

Vinicius is “unfortunately accustomed” to racist acts in Spanish stadiums, as his coach Carlo Ancelotti pointed out in November, after the Brazilian star was again insulted by a Barcelona fan, a week after similar incidents in Seville.

“It’s sad to talk about racism today, but we have to keep fighting so that people suffer less and less,” said Ancelotti.
