Jack Robinson and Carissa Moore take the Pipeline stage in Hawaii – 02/10/2023 – Na Pinta do Surfe

Days before starting the waiting window for the first stage of the 2023 world surfing circuit, a giant swell touched the Hawaiian Islands, due to this agitation a lot of sand was pushed to the Pipeline bench and ended up harming the quality of the waves during the event .

The WSL did what they could with the time they had, but conditions didn’t really cooperate.

Jack Robinson and Carissa Moore were the winners of the 2023 Billabong Pro Pipeline, they surfed hard throughout the event and are strong contenders for that year’s world title.

The best placed Brazilians were Caio Ibelli and Lucas Chianca who reached the semifinals.

The highlight of this stage was the Australian Jack Robinson who had a very tough walk where he dispatched Gabriel Medina, John John Florence, João Chianca and Leonardo Fioravanti.

Jack was very focused. Before the start of each heat he did his ventilation breaths. In the water he was calm, he always chose the best waves and got the best out of them. At the end of the heats he was still concentrated with punctual comments, you could see that he was in tune with Pipe’s waves and focused on the quest for the title.

Carissa Moore, as always, showed powerful surfing and was fit in the waves that appeared. Surfing at home, the Hawaiian left no room for her opponents. It was exciting to see her interview after winning. She knows the importance of this victory in Pipeline, which only last year became part of the WSL women’s calendar and is considered one of the most feared waves in the world. She was radiant and deserved this achievement.

Pipeline is a hostile place, the shallow bench and the intense crowd make surf training practically impossible. That’s why surfers put on a smile when the competition starts, surfing these waves with just one other person in the water is really a privilege for the few.

The novelty of this beginning of the season was the Apple watch used by surfers during heats. This technology brings real-time information on grades, rankings, battery life, priorities and other information, and the coolest thing is the fact that this invention is Brazilian.

Mano Ziul, who unfortunately passed away last year, was the creator of this project and was also responsible in the 1980s for developing the streaming transmission and online results as soon as the judges typed in the scores. The system created by Mano Ziul revolutionized the sport and is still used in competitions today.

The next stage of the World Surfing Tour will also be held in Hawaii at Sunset Beach, between February 12th and 23rd.
