The Secretary of State for Spanish Sports, Víctor Francos, said this Sunday (10), after learning of the resignation of the suspended president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, that it was “a good decision”.
“The former president of the RFEF [Real Federação Espanhola de Futebol] He did what he had to do, I think that’s what all Spanish citizens asked him to do,” Francos told Cadena Ser radio.
Luis Rubiales announced his resignation due to the non-consensual kiss scandal with Jenni Hermoso after his country’s victory in the Women’s World Cup, despite having refused to do so a few days ago.
“It’s a good decision because it benefits Spanish football and sport. We not only respect it, but we also share it,” said Francos, also president of the Superior Sports Council (CSD).
This body reported Rubiales to the Sports Administrative Court (TAD), which opened disciplinary proceedings against him.
“What happened is an important event”, added Francos, who reiterated the Spanish government’s desire that “the structural changes to which the interim president (of the RFEF) Pedro Rocha committed himself and that elections be held in a timely manner”.
The president of the CSD warned, however, that the Spanish executive will not interfere in the autonomy of the RFEF.
