IOC President plans to hold 1st esports Olympics in 2025 – News of Brazil

The president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach revealed this Monday, at an event in the city of Gangneung, South Korea, that he plans the first e-sports Olympics for 2025 or, at the latest, 2026. In an interview with Chinese news agency Xinhua, the president said that the studies carried out by the entity for the inaugural event have not yet been completed, but are well underway for the games to take place next year.

“I think we could have the first edition of the Esports Olympic Games in 2025 or, at the latest, 2026”he said.

According to the Inside the Games portal, Japan is leading the race to host the first e-sports Olympics held by the IOC. Conversations between the entity and the IOC have intensified since the end of 2023, but there is still no concrete decision.

In October last year, Thomas Bach announced the IOC’s desire to create the Esports Olympic Games. In his speech given at an official event of the entity in Mumbai, India, the president said that there are 3 billion people playing around the world and “the majority are under 34 years of age”.
