Hip Hop from Manaus gains historical work that reveals the importance of the movement

Manaus (AM) – November 4th promises to be a cultural milestone for the city of Manaus. At 4pm, at the emblematic Palácio Rio Branco, the book “Hip Hop Manaus Anos 80 Uma Cultura de Rua e Popular” will be launched, a work meticulously written by historian and local hip hop icon, Richard Adriano de Souza, also known as Adriano Art96 .

The book, which is the result of the master’s thesis in social history, defended by Richard at the Federal University of Amazonas, in 2016, reveals the socioeconomic facets of hip hop culture in Manaus. Through 14 insightful interviews, Richard reveals a multifaceted Manaus – a city that transcends the underground, delving into the subcultures of skateboarding, rock and breakdance.

“I wanted to show the complexity of a geographically isolated city, located in the heart of the Amazon, but, at the same time, vibrant, urban and full of contrasts. Through hip hop, he explores these pockets of poverty surrounded by islands of prosperity, and how this art form has become a voice for many young people,”

highlights the author.

The work is not limited to a historical narrative; she explores concepts such as globalization, cultural hybridity, identity and social marginalization, providing a solid foundation for understanding hip hop knowledge in Manaus.

“My goal went beyond telling a story. I wanted to provoke reflections on how culture and art can be means of expression and social transformation”,

says Adriano Art96.

The author

Richardson Adriano de Souza, or Adriano Art 96, was born in Manaus in 1975. Experiencing different social layers of the city, from the neighborhoods of Alvorada 1, 2, 3, to Praça da Saudade, Richard was a pioneer in the Hip Hop Manaus movement. Leader of the movement from 1997 to 2013, he stood out not only as a break dancer (popping and locking), but also as an active voice in promoting public policies for youth.

His career also includes producing and presenting the program “Amazonas Hip Hop”, later renamed “Comunidade Hip Hop”, the first of its kind in Manaus. With a degree in history from the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam) and a doctorate in social history, Richard continues to contribute to hip hop culture through research and publications.

The book “Hip Hop Manaus anos 80, Uma Cultura de Rua e Popular” has 270 pages and will be released in a limited edition of 200 copies.
