A healthy lifestyle considerably reduces the risk of varicose veins

Sun, heat, increased vasodilation of the circulatory system and the feeling of heaviness and tiredness in the legs. According to the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery (SBACV), during the summer, complaints about varicose veins increase by 20% to 30% due to the overload of blood circulation and dilation of the vessels.

To prevent the condition from worsening, angiologist Paulo Laredo, a specialist in varicose veins, warns never to ignore the seriousness of this condition and not to treat it just as an aesthetic discomfort.

“It’s never just aesthetic, don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s just a spare vessel with no connection to anything, it’s a consequence of a vascular disease that may not have even been identified yet. If left untreated, they can develop into thrombosis with pulmonary embolism and lead to death. They are silent killers.”,

states.

High risk of thrombosis

Thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in one or more large veins in the legs and thighs. This clot blocks blood flow and causes greater swelling and pain in the region. The problem is when treatment continues to be neglected and it evolves into a pulmonary embolism.

“It is much more common to occur in women first thing in the morning and starts with swelling of the left leg, progressing to chest pain and shortness of breath. The problem is that when this happens, it is already too late. It is necessary for women to avoid this worsening”,

alerts the specialist.

According to the angiologist, a healthy lifestyle has already considerably reduced the risk of varicose veins, even with a genetic predisposition. Regular exercise, maintaining the ideal weight according to age and height, strengthening the calf muscles and wearing elastic stockings help to improve these symptoms in the summer, but will not solve the problem.

“Treatments depend on the severity of these varicose veins in the woman’s body. Sometimes they appear to be small damaged vessels, but when we see them they are already compromising 80% of the circulation. Therefore, the best medicine today is still medical monitoring and early treatment depending on the risk. Each treatment is individual”,

ensures.
