Head of the internet management committee criticizes the Chamber’s retreat on Fake News PL – 04/10/2024 – Panel

Journalist Renata Mielli, coordinator of the CGI (Internet Management Committee), lamented this Tuesday (9) the decision of the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), to create a new working group to discuss the project of fake news and replacing deputy Orlando Silva (PCdoB-SP) with a new rapporteur.

Under Silva’s rapporteur, the project had already been discussed by a working group in the Chamber in 2021. The following year, the urgency was defeated in plenary by eight votes. In April 2023, however, the request that speeds up voting was approved. Since then, it has not received enough support in the Chamber to move forward.

For Mielli, the Chamber is missing the opportunity to take to the plenary a proposal “that was exhaustively debated with hundreds of people, in dozens, even hundreds of public hearings and that reached a report that had a great degree of agreement, at least among one broad field of society.”

The coordinator believes that anyone who disagrees with the text is because they do not want regulation of big techs or because they have some connection with social media platform companies. “Apart from the conservative sector that benefits from the absence of regulation, that benefits from disinformation, hate speech, to maintain its political articulation and the platforms themselves, there was broad agreement”, she states.

Mielli also states that the change is a setback. “We are going back several steps because a new commission will be created, a new rapporteur will be defined, a new discussion will begin, who knows which text. So how long can this take?”, he criticizes.
