The Lula (PT) government opened a tender for the construction of a new helipad for the Palácio do Planalto, with a structure that will be able to receive not only helicopters, but also so-called flying cars and other types of aerial vehicles.

Palácio do Planalto will spend R$769,000 on the new helipad, which will replace the existing structure at the back of the complex.

The tender opening notice was published this Tuesday (9) in the Official Gazette of the Union. After completing the process and hiring the company, the works must be completed within 180 days.

Palácio do Planalto already has a helipad, which is located at the back of the complex, close to the road called N2. This structure will be readjusted, according to the government’s justification, to accommodate larger and more modern vehicles, including the so-called flying cars, which have already started to be manufactured in some parts of the world.

The new demand was described in an order from the GSI (Institutional Security Office), which is part of the preliminary study for the construction of the new structure.

“On the subject, I agree that in order to adapt the helipad not only to the helicopter models currently available but also to future vectors that could be used to transport the President of the Republic, it would be necessary to redefine the capacity previously proposed for the aforementioned location landing”, states the order, signed by aviator colonel Sandro Bernardon, general coordinator of Air Transport at GSI.

The text also says that the new structure should support vectors of up to 5 tons and with a total length of 15 meters, a distance that goes from the main rotor blade to the last structure of the tail rotor.

The project envisages the construction of a vehicle access road, to connect the helipad area to the palace access. This access will be paved with interlocking flooring and, to this end, the current paving and a part of grass will be removed.

The concrete area of the new helipad will occupy a space of 412 square meters. 15 units of night marking lights will also be installed.

Lula usually travels in helicopters when he goes on an official trip around the country or abroad. Currently, these aircraft usually pick you up at the Palácio da Alvorada, the official residence of the Presidency, and take you to the Brasília Air Base. The distance between the two locations is around 20 km.
