The petista aimed at the date to mark a necessary chapter in the relations between civil power and the military. After years in which Jair Bolsonaro’s political alliance with the Armed Forces exploited September 7 to launch threats, the government has the opportunity to hold a boring ceremony to reinforce the obligations of the barracks within its institutional limits.

The trappings of the first Independence Day of this Lula mandate seem appropriately bureaucratic. The government’s idea is to rescue the colors green and yellow as national symbols dissociated from political currents. The slogan “democracy, sovereignty and union” would have the objective of framing an institution that was a partner of the coup, deviated from its attributions and served as a vehicle for divisionism.

Bolsonaro took advantage of the militaristic character of the ceremonies to feed a project associated with the authority of the Armed Forces. The then president planted the seed in 2019, when he linked the date to a struggle for freedom, threatened by political opponents. In the following years, he repeated the script by announcing his intention to disobey court orders, transforming the holiday into an exhortation to coup d’état.

The Bolsonarist hangover came heavy. The former president has indicated to allies that he does not intend to participate in any public celebrations on the holiday. Valdemar Costa Neto, head of the PL, told Jovem Pan that Bolsonaro’s supporters should do the same: “Let’s stay at home on the 7th of September, because what happened to us on the 7th of September last year was very sad “.

No decree would be able to remove the Bolsonarist elephant from the barracks and no protocol parade will undo the institutional corruption of recent years, but the monotony will serve the holiday well.
