The national president of the PT, deputy Gleisi Hoffmann (PR), accused this Sunday (17) former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) of “blackmailing” candidates for the presidency of the Chamber for the approval of a bill that guarantees him amnesty. The former president is the target of Operation Tempus Veritatis, which investigates an alleged coup attempt to keep him in power. The election to choose Arthur Lira’s (PP-AL) replacement in charge of the House will take place in February 2025.

“The guy who says he’s not afraid of being arrested only thinks about being amnestied! The news that Jair Bolsonaro is blackmailing candidates for president of the Chamber, demanding prior support for an amnesty for the crimes he committed, is appalling. Bolsonarism, the extreme right and coup plotters continue to threaten the country and poison democracy. They need to be contained and punished while there is still time”, said the parliamentarian in publishing on X.

During a demonstration, on February 25, Bolsonaro defended the approval of an amnesty project for those arrested for the acts of January 8, 2023.

“What I’m looking for is pacification, it’s putting an end to the past. It’s looking for a way for us to live in peace. It’s not to continue being shocked. It’s on the part of the Brazilian parliament, Nikolas, Gayer, Zucco, Feliciano, my colleagues here at On the other hand, it’s an amnesty for those poor people who are trapped in Brasília. We don’t want their children to be orphans of living parents”, said the former president at the time.

At least five proposals on the topic are being processed in the Chamber and two other proposals are being analyzed by committees in the Senate. If some of the projects are approved, they may still face legal action in the Federal Supreme Court (STF). Bolsonaro has already stated that Congress is the one who decides on a possible amnesty, however, he highlighted that the proposal should come from the Executive.

He highlighted that he finds it “difficult” for the government to intercede for those accused of January 8th. “That [a anistia] it has to come more from there. I know that parliament is the entity that decides this issue. But, coming from the Executive, it would be very welcome. I think it’s difficult,” said the former president in an interview with the program West Without Filterfrom the West Magazineon February 27th.

“The coup was not consummated, but that does not exonerate its mentors, financiers and much less its boss, because the crime has been proven. That is why they talk about amnesty, dirtying in their mouths a word with so much meaning in the history of democratic struggles”, said Gleisi on social media.
