João Farias, former Housing Secretary of Ricardo Nunes (MDB) and currently with the Republicans, received an invitation from the PMB (Brazilian Women’s Party) to run for Mayor of São Paulo in 2024.

Currently a pre-candidate for councilor in the capital, Farias is also one of the preferred names in his party to be Nunes’ vice-president in 2024. PL, União Brasil and PSDB have also nominated names for the post.

The former secretary says he is studying whether or not to accept the invitation. “I’m grateful for the recognition of my name as an alternative for São Paulo”, he says.

“We believe that João Farias did a great job as Secretary of Sports and Housing, showed management capacity, and can offer an alternative to this polarization that exists today in the city and in the country”, says Sidclei Bernardo, national vice-president of PMB.

According to Yann Monteiro, from the party’s national executive, the PMB is currently negotiating with DC, Agir, PMN and PRTB to form a ticket for Farias.

The departure of the former secretary from the Nunes administration took place in May, after he questioned a decree that was about to be published and that would benefit a specific company in the Pode Entrar housing program, which was under his purview, as revealed by the Panel. Without the decree, the company would be disqualified.

On the verge of publication, Farias resigned and exposed the problems with the decree, which has since been put on hold.
