Faruk Koca, former president of Ankaragücü, was banned from football after attacking a referee. The decision was announced this Thursday (14) by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF).
The Turkish Professional Football Disciplinary Board also ordered Ankaragücü to play five home games without the presence of fans and imposed a fine of 2,000,000 Turkish liras – approximately US$69,000, almost R$340 thousand.
After the 1-1 draw between Ankaragücü and Rizespor on Monday night (11), Koca ran onto the pitch and punched referee Halil Umut Meler in the face.
Furthermore, Meler stated that the leader threatened to kill him.
The referee was taken to hospital after the attack and was released on Wednesday (13). Because of the attack, Koca was suspended for five years, but as the sentence exceeds three years, it will serve as a lifetime suspension. He resigned as president of Ankaragücü on Tuesday (12).
Turkish Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç said on social media that the three individuals who attacked the referee were “arrested for the crime of ‘injuring, on a sports field in a way that resulted in a fracture, [de] a public servant who was performing his public duty.’”
Koca is among the three people arrested, according to Tunç. Koca, however, refuted the claims, saying he just “slapped” Meler in the face.
FIFA official and referee of the 2002 World Cup final, Pierluigi Collina, reiterated that physical and verbal abuse against referees is a “cancer that can cost football its life” following the incident.
Football in Turkey should resume on Tuesday (19), announced Mehmet Büyükekşi, president of the Turkish Football Federation, at a press conference on Wednesday (13).
The Turkish Football Federation had postponed games in all leagues in the country following the attack on referee Halil Umut Meler.
