Tricolor will measure forces against an old acquaintance in the World Cup

After winning the first Copa Libertadores da América title 44 days ago, Fluminense kicks off this Monday (18) towards another historic achievement for the club: the FIFA Club World Cup title. At 3pm (Brasília time), the team led by coach Fernando Diniz takes the field against Al Ahly (Egypt), champion of the African Champions League, in the semi-finals of the World Cup, at the King Abdullah Stadium, in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia).

Debuting in the competition, Tricolor will face an old acquaintance in the World Cup. Al Ahly has already participated in nine editions and, despite not having won any, came third in 2006, 2020 and 2021. The Egyptian team secured their presence in the semi against Flu by eliminating last Friday (15), 3 to 1, host Al-Ittihad, whose cast features stars such as Benzema and Kanté.

Only victory matters to the Rio team this Monday (18). If they win, Fluminense will qualify for the world title match against the winner of the other semi, between Manchester City and Urawa Red Diamonds, at 3pm on Tuesday (19). The Club World Cup final will take place next Friday (22), at 3pm.

Aware of the challenge that Flu has ahead, Diniz stated during a press conference on Sunday (17) that the team knows their Egyptian opponent well and is prepared to do their best on the field.

“We watched seven Al Ahly games, not just the last one, and also seven Al-Ittihad games. They [o Al Ahly] They have a very strong base, it’s a team that doesn’t change much, a very consistent way of playing, very good players, an extremely popular team, with a huge fan base. It’s a team that arrives with all the merit and has all our respect.”

Tricolor’s season this year was crowned with the Libertadores title after beating Boca Junions (Argentina) 2-1 at Maracanã. Now, Flu is two games away from, perhaps, winning another unprecedented title for its collection at the headquarters of Laranjeiras, a neighborhood in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro.

“Playing in the Club World Cup for us has been every day since I arrived at Fluminense. It was a dream that we had. It wasn’t something that happened by chance, quite the opposite, it was a lot of work. Obviously, it is not because you work hard that you will win, but working hard and dreaming every day that it is possible brings you closer to achievements and that is what brought us here”, said Diniz, who returned to Tricolor in April 2022.

Possible lineups

Fluminense: Fábio; Samuel Xavier (Guga), Nino, Felipe Melo and Marcelo; André, Matheus Martinelli and Ganso; Arias, Keno and Cano.

Al Ahly – El Shanawy; M. Hany, El Hanafi, Abdelmonem and Maâloul (El Debes); Attia, Ashour and Koka (Fouad); Tau, El Shahat and Kahraba.
