Former Dutch national team player Marc Overmars will not be able to hold any position in professional football for at least a year due to his inappropriate behavior towards women at Ajax Amsterdam, the Dutch football association (KNVB) said on Wednesday.

The KNVB confirmed information from the Dutch newspaper NRC, according to which FIFA said it had adopted the suspension applied to Overmars in the Netherlands at the end of last year.

Overmars left his job at Ajax in February 2022, admitting “unacceptable” behavior after information emerged at the club that he had sent inappropriate messages and photographs to a number of women who worked there.

Last year, an independent sports tribunal banned Overmars from any role in Dutch football for two years over the incidents, with a one-year suspension.

The KNVB then requested FIFA to transform the national suspension into a global suspension.

“We have a duty to inform this sanction to the FIFA disciplinary committee… which decided to adopt the suspension from November 16, 2023”the KNVB said in a statement.

Overmars is technical director of Belgian club Royal Antwerp, which he joined shortly after his sudden departure from Ajax.

A spokesperson for Overmars told NRC that the former Netherlands, Arsenal and Barcelona player had been informed of the suspension but was not yet ready to comment.

Overmars can appeal the FIFA sanction, according to the newspaper.
