Ferroviária x Corinthians: Arthur Elias seeks new cup – 09/06/2023 – Sport

In his first call as coach of the Brazilian women’s national team, Arthur Elias brought together nine Corinthians players. Almost a third of the 30 athletes on the list.

The number drew attention, but it is not unjustifiable. The team’s recent history is excellent, which will continue to be led by the 42-year-old from São Paulo for another month and a half, before he starts dedicating himself exclusively to national training.

They include Letícia, Tamires, Luana and Duda Sampaio, a quartet that was also in the last World Cup, in addition to Kemelli, Yasmin, Katiuscia, Gabi Portilho and Jheniffer.

They are players who were fundamental for the Parque São Jorge team to remain the most successful team in the sport in the country in recent years. It was precisely this success that was the reason why Arthur was chosen to replace the Swedish Pia Sundhage, fired after Brazil’s failure in the World Cup held in Oceania.

The nine athletes named have an average of 105 matches played with the alvinegra shirt. Most have been at the club for at least three seasons and have helped it win a significant part of the 14 titles accumulated in the last seven seasons, since Corinthian women’s football was reactivated.

No female team in the country had so many achievements in the period.

This Thursday (7), Arthur Elias counts on his trusted athletes to be close to ending his cycle in the São Paulo team with a golden key, when fighting for the fifth national title.

Responsible for eliminating Santos in the semifinals, Corinthians goes to Fonte Luminosa, in Araraquara, for the first match of the Brazilian Championship decision, against Ferroviária. The return match will be on Sunday (10), at 4 pm, at the Neo Química Arena. TV Globo and SporTV will broadcast both games.

“It’s the team to beat”, said Jéssica de Lima, coach of the team from the interior of São Paulo since the 2022 season. [Elias] it was the best choice [para a seleção]. I have great admiration for Corinthians and the work they do.”

Not everyone, however, approves of Arthur’s choices. Ricardo Belli, coach of Palmeiras, criticized the fact that nine Corinthians players were called up, while only two Palmeiras were part of the list: Bia Zaneratto and Amanda Gutierres.

“If it were Diniz doing this in the men’s team, I guarantee everyone would be kicking ass”, roared commander Alviverde. “Women’s football is sometimes no man’s land.”

The rival also raised the tone. “I don’t know how he has that opinion. The Palmeiras team, in the clashes we had, never beat me, except for one game in which I placed the base category.”

Black and white hegemony has been almost total in Brazil. Only Ferroviária itself, since 2018, has managed to beat Corinthians, in the 2019 edition, in a final decided on penalties. The association of Parque São Jorge lifted the cup in 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Corinthians also took three Copa Libertadores titles — which, in its female version, does not have the proportionate weight that the male dispute has in relation to other championships. Winner in 2017 in partnership with Audax and already under independent management in 2019 and 2021, the club will seek the tetra in Colombia.

It will be at the continental event that Elias will officially say goodbye to the Parque São Jorge club. The edition to be held from October 5th to 21st, in the cities of Bogotá and Cali, will be the coach’s last challenge before he leaves for the Brazilian national team for good.
