Total is 50% lower than announced in May last year
The estimated number of people who will take part in the opening ceremony of this year’s Olympics has been revised and has dropped to around 300,000, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said on Wednesday (31).
The opening ceremony will be a six-kilometre parade along the River Seine on July 26, amid security concerns as France is on high terrorism alert.
“The idea is that there will be 100 thousand people on the lower piers [com ingressos pagos] and more than 220 thousand people on the upper piers [com ingressos gratuitos]”Darmanin told French TV channel France 2. “And then there are all those who live there and who will be able to rent it, have celebrations along the Seine.”
The last time Darmanin estimated the number of participants was in May 2023, when he said up to 600,000 people were expected at the opening ceremony.
