The founder of Educafro, Frei Davi, sent a message to the rector of USP (University of São Paulo), Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior, asking the institution to review the terms of the Support Program for Permanence and Student Training (Papfe), which offers such as housing and transportation for students with socioeconomic difficulties.

The initiative took place after a mobilization of students, who held a protest last week against the recent changes in the program. Before, it worked through different aids —such as books, food, housing. Now it has been unified.

A total amount of R$800 is intended for students who are not offered a place in USP’s student housing. For students contemplated with housing, the benefit is partial, of R$ 300.

According to students interviewed by the column, the selection process was flawed and lacked transparency. In addition, according to the students, some received higher values than stipulated with the change, as there was a sum of the different aids.

The column spoke with students who had their applications denied, but did not gain access to their socioeconomic scores, which is what ranks or does not rank a candidate.

“Some students who filed the appeal and had their requests for aid granted are not having their acceptances released at Jupiter [sistema da universidade onde é feito o pedido]receive no response from PRIP [Pró-Reitoria de Inclusão e Pertencimento]”, says a manifesto that circulates among students.

In addition, students claim that there are problems in the registration and request system for students to receive credit.

In the message sent to the rector of USP, the founder of Educafro asks the university to extend the deadline for defining those approved for the aid. “So that USP can review those it denied”, says Frei Davi to the column.

Sought after, USP says that, this year, investments in the student permanence program were increased by almost 60%, with a budget of R$ 188 million.

“The program also began to serve both undergraduate and graduate students and the value of the scholarships was increased to R$ 800”, he also says, in a note.
