Away from political life and back to private activity, the former governor of São Paulo João Doria received support from Santos fans to run for leadership of the São Paulo club — whose election for the presidency takes place this Saturday (9). Doria says he received the invitation to enter the dispute, but declined.

The former tucano does not openly criticize Andres Rueda’s current management. He claims, however, that this is the worst moment in history. In addition to facing a serious financial crisis, Santos is at risk of being relegated, for the first time, to the second division of the Brazilian Championship. This Wednesday (6), they play against Fortaleza and need to win.

For Doria, running the club requires “intensity”, full-time dedication. He assesses that the main solution to debts is joining the SAF (Sociedade Anônima do Futebol), a model in which Santos would become a club-company, with freedom to sell shares to businesspeople. This is what Botafogo, Cruzeiro and Vasco already do.

Supporter of the candidacy of former Santos president Marcelo Teixeira, the former governor also defends the creation of a senior council for older figures on the team. According to him, young people have the feeling of modernity that Santos needs and, therefore, must be active in decisions.

Was your name considered as a possible candidate for president of Santos?
Yes, and I immediately declined. There are people better able to carry out this management, who live in Santos, and can dedicate full time to this activity. It cannot be a secondary activity. Either it’s full time or it won’t work. I was consulted several times [para dirigir] and said I’m not the right person. Now that I have returned to private activity, I cannot give up this activity again to dive into a project with the intensity that Santos needs.

There is criticism that the current president only cuts spending without increasing revenue. Do you agree?
I don’t comment on the management, but, from a football point of view, the obvious indicates this: it is Santos’ worst phase in its history.

Some presidential candidates defend joining the SAF [Sociedade Anônima do Futebol]. sWas it the only way out?
No, but it’s the best. I see no other path for Santos and Brazilian football other than the SAF.

Do you support any candidate?
Yes, Marcelo Teixeira. As a former president of Santos, he knows management and football. You need someone with experience on both sides.

How can we resolve the financial crisis, which leaves the club R$8 million in the red every year?
This is a small deficit considering the size of the club. The measures [necessárias] they would be cost reduction and revenue optimization management; a study of sponsorships in different teams, in addition to the main team, to enhance these quotas [de patrocínio] to the maximum limit. Now, the club has to be the determining factor of this value. Santos is not priced. He sets the price.

Andres Rueda [atual presidente] He has already complained about how “the thinking beings on the team” see the situation. Do advisors and managers have an outdated vision?
I have to agree with Rueda in this case. There is a delay, especially among older and more traditional people, in how they see the sport. Football today is a business, it is a business activity. It is no longer a fact of the past, it is a topic of the present. This vision requires a level of modernity. Football is no longer in analogue time and a considerable part of the board works in the past. They should create a senior council just to value Santos’ past history, which is brilliant and deserves to be remembered, but leave a more active presence on the council for young people, who have the feeling of modernity that Santos needs.

What is the main challenge for the next president of Santos, considering, for example, that Santos is out of the Copa do Brasil, the most profitable tournament in the country, and is at risk of being relegated for the first time in its history?
Work, innovate and persevere. This is the challenge. Make Santos once again the team with great respect in its history, for having revealed to the world the best player of all time, King Pelé. Santos has an obligation to recover and give the fans the joy they deserve. The fans have shown solidarity, especially in this toughest phase. She deserves to be rewarded with football and quality management.
