State deputies have agreed to ensure that the gallery of the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo, where the public gathers, remains closed until the end of the legislative year, under the argument of avoiding new riots such as the confrontation between protesters and police officers on Wednesday (6), during the vote on the privatization of Sabesp.

State deputy Danilo Balas (PL) obtained signatures from 30 of the 94 deputies in a request he sent to the president of the House, André do Prado (PL), requesting the closure of the space. Prado has not yet decided whether to accept the demand.

If the request is accepted, proposals from the Tarcísio de Freitas government (Republicans) that should also cause mobilization of protesters could be voted on without an audience. An example is the amendment to the state Constitution that opens up the possibility of reducing investments in Education from 30% to 25% of state revenue, transferring the surplus to Health.

According to the parliamentarians’ request, the closure of the gallery would be “fundamental to ensuring the maintenance of order and the integrity of the public building itself, in addition to the peaceful end of this year’s activities.”

Eight of Alesp’s fourteen party leaders signed the document, which shows that the election has a chance of prospering. They are: Altair Moraes (Republicans), Carlos Cezar (PL), Delegado Olim (PP), Gerson Pessoa (Podemos), Itamar Borges (MDB), Leonardo Siqueira (Novo), Milton Leite Filho (União) and Paulo Correa Jr. (PSD).

The gallery is currently closed to undergo a technical assessment of damage and the need for possible repairs related to Wednesday’s riot. The session on Thursday (7) already took place without an audience.
