The United States Embassy in Brazil reiterated this Monday (8) its “support for Brazilian democratic institutions”. In notepublished on social media, the diplomatic representation marked one year since the acts of January 8, 2023. This afternoon, the government held the “Unshaken Democracy” event to remember the invasion and depredation of the headquarters of the Three Powers, in Brasília.

“Democracy won! One year after the attacks on the 3 Powers of Brazil and in the same year in which we celebrate 200 years of friendship between Brazil and the USA, we reiterate our support for Brazilian democratic institutions. Consolidated and strong democracy unites our countries,” said the embassy. On January 6, 2021, the United States Capitol was invaded by supporters of former President Donald Trump.

During the ceremony, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated that if the acts of January 8 had been successful in Brazil, “political adversaries and constituted authorities could be shot or hanged in a public square, judging by what the former coup president preached during the campaign and his followers plotted on social media.”

The president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), minister Luís Roberto Barroso, highlighted that “thousands of people, apparently ordinary, inflamed by falsehood, conspiracy theories, anti-democratic feelings and resentment, were transformed into criminals, apprentices of terrorists, a sad defeat of the spirit.”
