Members of the Partido Novo assess that the fiscal situation of the state of Minas Gerais and the need to maintain a good relationship with the STF may have weighed on governor Romeu Zema’s decision to attend the first anniversary of the January 8 attacks.

After being pressured by members of the party, Zema ended up giving up participating in the ceremony at the National Congress.

In December, STF minister Kassio Nunes Marques granted an injunction extending the deadline for the state to obtain a new agreement for its debt with the Union by another 120 days.

This measure gave Minas Gerais financial breathing room and time for Zema to come up with a solution. At the time, the governor said he was “extremely satisfied” with the decision.

Novo leaders argued, however, that his presence at the event would generate great wear and tear on the right and weaken the opposition party’s stance towards the Lula government, and he was convinced to back down.
