Deforestation in Pará drops 50% in 6 months, data indicates – 02/04/2024 – Panel

The 15 municipalities in Pará that are under environmental emergency had a 67% reduction in deforestation from August 2023 to January 2024, the first six months of the Year Prodes 2024, while in the state deforestation was 50% lower compared to the same period of the Year Prodes 2023.

Data from Deter (Deforestation Detection in Real Time), a system from Inpe (National Institute for Space Research), points to a reduction of 935 km² in deforestation in Altamira, Anapu, São Félix do Xingu, Pacajá, Novo Progresso, Itaituba, Portel, Senator José Porfírio, Novo Repartimento, Uruará, Rurópolis, Placas, Trairão, Jacareacanga and Medicilândia.

The biggest reduction in the period was recorded in Portel, with a drop of 82%, followed by São Félix do Xingu, with a decrease of 70%.

In December 2023 alone, the reduction in deforestation alerts in the 15 municipalities was 47.3%, according to Deter.
