The FIFA Club World Cup will have a new format starting in 2025. This Tuesday (14th), football’s governing body announced the distribution of vacancies to the 32 participating clubs.

The tournament is scheduled to take place between June and July 2025. The expectation is that it will work as a test for the 2026 World Cup, played in the United States, Mexico and Canada. So far, FIFA has not made official the venue for the club competition.

Distribution of vacancies

UEFA (Europe): 12

Conmebol (South America): six

AFC (Asia): four

Each confederation will have the autonomy to define the criteria for distributing vacancies. So far, Conmebol has not detailed how the distribution between the South American teams will be. Under the current format, the Copa Libertadores champions qualify for the Club World Cup.

WORLD WORLD FORMAT

The competition is scheduled to take place every four years. According to president Gianni Infantino, the Club World Cup “will be like a World Cup”.

If FIFA follows to the letter, the clubs will be distributed in eight groups, with four clubs each. The entity, however, has not yet unraveled the format of the competition.
