Football player Daniel Alves, convicted of rape in Spain, presented himself to the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia, this Thursday (28). It was the first time he had been there since he was released from prison, on provisional release, after paying a bond of 1 million euros, equivalent to R$5.5 million.

Court appearances must occur weekly. This is one of the measures required by the local court so that the former Barcelona and Brazilian team defender remains out of jail while his defense resources are analyzed.

Alves arrived at the hearing accompanied by his lawyer, Inés Guardiola. He is expected to repeat his visit every Friday, but this first appearance was brought forward because of the Easter holiday.

Other measures required for Alves’ provisional release were the delivery of his two passports (Spanish and Brazilian) and commitments not to leave the country and to maintain distance and incommunicado with the complainant.

Daniel Alves was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for the rape of a 23-year-old woman in a nightclub in the capital of Catalonia, in 2022. By two votes to one, the Barcelona Court partially agreed with the defense’s request to release him. provisionally, pending the final sentence.

According to information from the France-Presse agency, the victim’s lawyer, Ester García, criticized the court’s decision, saying that it was “Justice for the rich”. The Public Prosecutor’s Office and the prosecution opposed the measure on the grounds that the player has the financial means to escape. The defense lawyer argued, however, that he is domiciled and has roots in Barcelona.

Daniel Alves was released last Monday (25), after having spent 14 months in pre-trial detention at the Brians 2 Penitentiary Center while awaiting trial. The defense asked for provisional release claiming that he had already served a quarter of his sentence.
