Corinthians negotiates Luan’s return to Grêmio

Luan has been at Corinthians since 2020, hired by the club from the Rio Grande do Sul team for around R$29 million, during the management of President Andrés Sanchez, and with a salary of R$800,000 – the expectation is that he will receive a much lower amount to sign again with the Gauchos. According to a financial statement released last year, Corinthians owes R$ 4.5 million in image rights to the player. By technical choice, he has not entered the field since 2022 and trains at separate times from the main cast.

The deal happens after Luan was attacked by members of an organized crowd at a motel in the west zone of São Paulo, on July 4th. According to the Police Report recorded by friends who were with the player, one of the attackers was armed and the athlete was threatened with death if he did not leave the club. The aggression was filmed and the images went viral on social media. Hours later, the midfielder published an image with bloody shorts with the message “it’s not just football”.

Renato Gaúcho, coach of Grêmio, recently said that he was sought out at the beginning of the year by the player for a possible return to the team from Rio Grande do Sul. The coach revealed, in an interview with Placar magazine, that the high amount received by him at Corinthians was an impasse for the deal. Before Saturday’s match with Atlético-MG, won by the Gauchos by 1-0, for the 16th round of the Brasileirão, Renato stated that he was optimistic about the player’s return to Porto Alegre and that the final word for the hiring was his.

“He is a boy that I have a lot of affection for. He gave me some problems during the week, but he gave problems to the opponent”, said the coach. “I never leave anyone in the lurch, I try to help, because I know that the player needs that comeback. If he comes back, I’m sure he’ll do what we ask, he’ll walk in line, I don’t know how his life is in São Paulo.”

At the age of 30, Luan was unable to repeat at Corinthians the football that made him become a Grêmio idol. He became bitter in the reserve with different coaches and was loaned to Santos in the second half of last year, where he also did not do well. For the Gaucho team, Luan won a Copa do Brasil (2016), a Copa Libertadores (2017), a Recopa (2018), two State (2018 and 2019), in addition to the Recopa Gaúcha (2019). The attacking midfielder was named America’s Best Player in 2017, and also helped the Brazilian national team win gold at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
