Copa do Brasil will have “replay”, classics, workers’ duel and more

A Brazil Cup 2024 starts this Tuesday (20) and will have, over the next few days, 80 teams fighting for 40 places in the first phase games — another 12 teams enter directly into the third phase.

At this stage, the tournament is played in a single game, and the visitors qualify in case of victory or even a draw. Whoever plays away from home has this advantage because they are better placed in the CBF Ranking in relation to their opponent.

The 40 winners know who their next rivals are, as the draw was made in brackets with four teams each.

One of the highlights of this edition is a duel with a kind of “replay”: Cianorte x Corinthians. Paraná and São Paulo played for the Copa do Brasil in 2005 — but on a round-trip basis. On that occasion, the black and white team lost the first match 3-0, but recovered and avoided early elimination at Pacaembu.

Two state classics mark the kickoff of the competition: Audax x Portuguesa, in Rio, and Capital x Tocantinópolis, in Tocantins. The two clashes take place on Wednesday night (21), and the home team are in their first participation in the tournament.

There are seven other debutants in the Copa do Brasil: Água Santa-SP, Amazonas-AM, Grêmio Sampaio-RR, Itabuna-BA, Manauara-AM, Olaria-RJ and Petrolina-PE.

Another curiosity is the “worker” confrontation. O Operário-MS receives Operário-PR at the Estádio das Moreninhas, in Campo Grande, next week. Another Operário also plays in this phase of the Brazilian Cup: that of Várzea Grande (MT) — the team faces Criciúma on the same day as the “namesakes”.

In addition to Corinthians and Criciúma, Série A is represented by eight clubs in the 1st phase of the Copa do Brasil: Atlético-GO, Bahia, Cruzeiro, Cuiabá, Fortaleza, Inter, Juventude and Vasco.
The other ten participants from the national elite only enter the 3rd phase. They are: Palmeiras, Grêmio, Atlético-MG, Flamengo, Botafogo, Bragantino, Fluminense, São Paulo (who are in the Libertadores), Athletico-PR (classified via Brasileiro 2023) and Vitória (series B 2023 champion). Ceará and Goiás are the others already guaranteed in the stage in question.
