The Carlota Pereira de Queirós award, from the Women’s Commission, is usually awarded to women who promote women’s agendas. In this latest edition, three winners are publicly abortionists, but what caught attention is that two of them were nominated by conservative parliamentarians. Cida Gonçalves, the Minister of Women in the Lula government, was nominated by congresswoman Lêda Borges (PSDB-GO), while Rosa Weber was nominated by Soraya Santos (PL-RJ).

Former STF minister Rosa Weber guided ADPF 442, an action that aims to decriminalize abortion up to the 12th week, and filed her vote and report in favor of the practice before her retirement. Weber did not attend the ceremony and neither did congresswoman Soraya Santos, responsible for her nomination.

Lêda Borges, who is also president of the Women’s Commission and presided over the solemn session, praised Cida Gonçalves, the Minister of Women who in the first months of government said that “for us, abortion is a public health issue.” It is very important for us to have a minister like this, who knows what she is doing, sitting there in the Ministry of Women. She knows exactly from her 40 years of experience”, highlighted Borges.

In addition to Cida Gonçalves and Rosa Weber, another public defender of abortion honored was Leila de Andrade Linhares Basterd. Leila Basterd has several texts in favor of the practice, such as “Legalization and decriminalization of abortion in Brazil”.

Flávia Gonzaga and Maria Luiza Fontenele completed the list of honorees. In his emphatic and poetic speech, Fontenele declared that “this society is the society of the male, white, Western man. The value is man and now that system has collapsed. Patriarchy has entered a crisis and must be overcome. The time has come for us women to take charge and build a new story.”
