Check out subjects and themes that may appear on the Enem test

Formulas, grammar rules and historical dates are important content to know before taking the National High School Exam (Enem). But, in addition to the subjects learned in the classroom, Enem questions tend to bring up current topics, which are often covered in an integrated manner in more than one subject.

Both for the essay and for objective questions involving current topics, students must be well informed about events in Brazil and the world.

Current events in Enem are covered in an interdisciplinary manner, and may include questions relating to the Portuguese language, mathematics, biology, geography and history, for example.

One of the issues that can be addressed is environmental impacts and the increase in extreme cases, in the opinion of the geography and current affairs teacher and content marketing manager of the Descomplica platform, Cláudio Hansen.

The expert cites the relationship between deforestation in the Amazon and the increase in greenhouse gas emissions with the intensification of global warming and the strengthening of extreme events such as heat waves and cyclones. Cases of tragedies caused by rain and landslides, such as those in Petrópolis (RJ) in 2022 and Bertioga (SP), in 2023, also gain strength in the Enem test.

Another topic that may be included in the test is the issue of indigenous peoples in Brazil, according to the professor. “Disputes over land demarcations for indigenous peoples generate great debate throughout 2023. We saw the intensification of the struggle of the Yanomami peoples against the advance of illegal mining and the violence that this process caused”, he explains.

Knowledge of the concept of democracy, as well as the recent threats that States are combating, can also be the subject of Enem questions. The professor cites cases such as the overthrow of governments in the African Sahel region. which since 2021 has been accumulating deep crises.

The war in Ukraine and its consequences, despite having already appeared in Enem, can still be addressed. Other themes mentioned by professor Cláudio Hansen are racism and cases of violence related to it and technological advances and the redesign of the world of work with the advancement of artificial intelligence.

Art names
Big names in art who have recently passed away can also be topics covered in the tests, according to professor Carol Mendonça, from the Portuguese channel for Desesperados. She cites as an example the singers Rita Lee, who died in May this year, and Gal Costa, who passed away in November last year.

“Rita Lee has already fallen into the language department in relation to the Mutants. Gal Costa also has many works that can be worked on, because Enem likes to work on songs. Even their historical participation in relation to the role of women in the Brazilian artistic scene can be addressed”, he suggests.

Carol Mendonça separated a list of 10 main thematic areas that deserve students’ attention: education, environment and sustainability, health, security, economy and development, culture and behavior, technology and information, communication and language, prejudice and accessibility.

According to her, although the Enem questions are well explained in the statements, the resolution will be easier for students who already have knowledge about the current topics that are covered. “It’s worth taking a look at these topics, because if you fail the test it won’t be such a big shock.”

Topics such as vaccination, environment, health and education are on Professor Noslen’s list of attention. He guides students to pay attention to issues that have been in the news in recent months, by reading news from several different outlets.

“It is good to invest in reading news from several different outlets, to see how each outlet approaches that subject,” says Professor Noslen, warning that the source of information must be outlets that have reference and validation.
