The clubs that will compete in this year’s Brazilian Championship have 126 foreign players in their squads, the majority of whom are Argentine. The number represents 19.5% of the total number of athletes.
The data is from the Transfermarkt website and follows one of the new features of the Brasileirão 2024 regulations, which increased the limit of foreign players that can be used per match to nine. In 2023, each team could enter the field with a maximum of seven athletes of other nationalities.
One of the arguments for the rule change — unanimously approved by the clubs — is the attempt to minimize the space left by young Brazilian athletes who go abroad.
The casts contain representatives from 16 countries, in addition to Brazil. Argentina, with 42 athletes, is the country that gives away the most players, followed by Uruguay, with 23 athletes, and Colombia, with 14.
The other nationalities come, in descending order, from Paraguay, Ecuador, Chile, Venezuela, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Angola, Bulgaria, Nicaragua, Peru, France and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Botafogo and Grêmio are the teams with the most players from other countries, each with ten. Botafogo’s SAF (Sociedade Anônima do Futebol) brought reinforcements such as Venezuelan Savarino, Uruguayan Damián Suárez and Paraguayan Óscar Romero.
For this season, the team from Rio Grande do Sul hired Argentine goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín and added Argentine Pavón, Venezuelan Soteldo and Diego Costa, who is a naturalized Spaniard, to the squad. The last three were already on the Brazilian market in 2023.
The list of clubs with the most foreigners continues with Internacional, Athletico-PR and Fortaleza, each with nine players. For Alessandro Barcellos, president of Inter, the possibility of hiring abroad, especially in South America, is important as it expands the range of opportunities for Brazilian clubs.
“I also don’t think this will hinder the emergence of new talent in the country, as the youth teams are the true essence of our roots, both technically and financially,” he stated.
In the view of Marcelo Paz, CEO of SAF in Fortaleza, the history of foreign idols in Brazil also favors the arrival of players. “That image of the winner remains, like Gamarra was at Corinthians, Dario Pereira at São Paulo, Arrascaeta today at Flamengo. Without a doubt, it remains in the fan’s imagination that it is possible to bring a foreigner who will be an idol.”
“Regarding the participation of foreigners, in Cuiabá we have few in our squad. But we voted in favor of this topic because it is something collectively important”, said Cristiano Dresch, president of the club from Mato Grosso, with two foreigners in the squad. “South Americans, who are the main foreigners in Brazil, can come and replace these losses.”
Among the coaches, there are eight foreign professionals, increasing the percentage of non-Brazilian coaches among Serie A teams to 40%.
Four are Argentines —Eduardo Coudet, from Internacional, Juan Pablo Vojvoda, from Fortaleza, Ramón Díaz, from Vasco, and Gabriel Milito, from Atlético-MG— and four Portuguese —Artur Jorge, from Botafogo, Antônio Oliveira, from Corinthians, Abel Ferreira , from Palmeiras, and Pedro Caixinha, from Red Bull Bragantino.
