Manaus (AM) – The Amazonian chess champion student, Suan Lira, a student at the Centro de Educação de Tempo Integral (Ceti) Elisa Bessa Freire, located in the East Zone of Manaus, will represent Amazonas in the 2023 South American School Championship, held in the city of Santiago, in Chile. The competition, which brings together sporting talents, contributes to the sporting, cultural and exchange development between young people aged 12 to 14, from 11 participating countries.
The young player leaves for the Chilean capital this Sunday (3), joining the Brazilian delegation made up of more than 220 student athletes who will compete in 11 sports. The athletes who will compete in the South American Championship are champions of the Brazilian School Games (JEBs), a criterion adopted by CBDE for calling up the Brazilian team. The games start this Monday (4).
Master of the Chess Confederation, teacher and one of the coaches who led Suan Lira to be known in the chess community as the “chess prodigy”, Andrey Neves, said that he is witness to the exceptional talent of the young Amazonian.
“In 2022, he was 4th in the Brazilian Championship. Not satisfied, he returned, being classified to represent Brazil, in his category, in the Italian championship. There, we managed to be the best in the Americas”,

Chess Prodigy
Achievements worthy of timeless admiration, as the only one to defeat the Paraguayan master Cubas and 16 players in the “Simultaneous” chess exhibition at the “Manaus Chess Open”, Suan Lira discovered his talent in July 2021, in a chess project offered by Ceti Elisa Bessa Freire.
Parents’ pride, after classes at school, the student dedicates himself, even more, at home, to reading books trying to improve his skills.
Suan Lira highlighted the constant support of the State Department of Education and School Sports to participate in the tournaments. The athlete said that his goal is to continue improving.
“The world championship is another level, there are very strong players, so I always have to stay focused”,
said Lira.
Shy and of few words, the young man follows his story with a single dream: to achieve the title of master of the International Chess Federation (Fide), a lifetime honor granted by Fide to professional chess players, who have obtained a score equal to or greater than 2,300 points. in matches valid for the federation.
“We are very happy for Suan’s achievements in chess. And for the opportunity to represent, not only the state education network, but Amazonas in South America. We are all rooting for this victory”, highlighted the executive assistant secretary of school sports at the Department of Education, Amanda Silotti.
