Carpini’s week is worth more than São Paulo’s – 01/29/2024 – Sandro Macedo

The circle of technicians has never been as globalized as in recent days. It all started with José Mourinho, fired from Roma and, until the conclusion of this column, unemployed.

Then there was Jürgen Klopp, who resigned from Liverpool at the end of the season — a dismissal means someone who resigned or abandoned his duties… I went looking. And, to finish, Xavi also announced that he will leave Barcelona. In Klopp’s case, he has a little, or a lot, of burnout. In the case of Xavi, he has a little, or a lot, of a mediocre team, by Barcelona standards. It’s the “I’m going to leave before it gets worse” thing.

With these vacancies and these names on the market, coaching rumors will run rampant in the coming months. They have already placed Xabi Alonso, from Bayer Leverkusen, at Liverpool (it looks like he will); and Arteta, from Arsenal, at Barcelona (it looks like he won’t). In none of the international rumors will you hear Tite’s name. This tram-train-boat passed by, empty. Tite must spend some time in Rio, where the extreme heat has already provoked phrases such as “Carioca is the strongest state in Brazil”.

But here in our little world we already have problems with big team coaches, that is, Mano Menezes at Corinthians. The professor is struggling with a squad that didn’t go as well as agreed. He lost players and has not yet received necessary reinforcements. Added to this is the fact that the manager has been involved in small controversies, which become bigger due to the lack of results. One day, he became persona non grata throughout Cuiabá; in the other, he is accused of calling Yuri Alberto stupid — it doesn’t look good for teachers to call students stupid.

But the name of the week will be Thiago Carpini, the man who was from Água Santa, went up to Série A with Juventude, was right at Santos, was scouted by Cruzeiro and, finally, leads São Paulo.

Carpini did not seem like the ideal name for the Morumbi team when Dorival embraced the trap team. But behold, in just a few days, Carpini can stamp his work card until the middle of the year, or more.

This Tuesday, the challenge is against Corinthians, in Itaquera. Carpini has the chance to make history and succeed where everyone else failed, including Dorival, Rogério Ceni, Hernán Crespo, Fernando Diniz, Muricy and many others.

And there’s more. On Sunday (4), São Paulo and Carpini face the first final of the year, for the Brazilian Super Cup, against Palmeiras, in Belo Horizonte. In the rest of the world, Super Cups are almost luxury friendlies that are worth a trophy. It’s more tense here. And, despite the “classic is classic” story, Palmeiras won’t take it out loud, but they are the favorites.

For São Paulo, not beating Corinthians (again) or losing to the close-knit Palmeiras shouldn’t leave any consequences.

But, for Carpini, in case of victory(s), the coach changes status. He won’t go to Barcelona or Liverpool, but he could have his time extended at Morumbi.

Those who follow multiple sports had multiple reasons to smile over the weekend. In the NBA, laker LeBron James, against the Golden State Warriors, broke the record for rebounds of his long career. The 39-year-old caught 20 while also recording 36 points and 12 assists. The last guy with at least 30 points, 20 rebounds and 10 assists was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1976.

In the Australian Open final, Italian Jannik Sinner, 22, became only the second man born in the 21st century to win a Grand Slam — the other was Carlos Alcaraz.
