Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has been undergoing chemotherapy treatment for four months to combat Hodgkin’s lymphoma (cancer that originates in the lymphatic system, which is a part of the immune system, the body’s defense), he announced this Friday (12) the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) on behalf of the family of the former coach of the Brazilian men’s football team.
According to Parreira’s family and the medical team at Hospital Samaritano, the 80-year-old coach “He has been undergoing chemotherapy for four months and has shown an excellent response.”
Carlos Alberto Parreira won two national competitions as a coach, the 1984 Brazilian Championship with Fluminense and the 2002 Copa do Brasil with Corinthians. But the highlight of his career as a coach was the victorious campaign with the Brazilian team in the 1994 World Cup, held in the United States.
In addition, Parreira also participated in winning the 1970 World Cup, held in Mexico, in the role of physical trainer for Zagallo’s coaching staff.
Hodgkin’s lymphoma
A less common lymphoma than other types, Hodgkin’s lymphoma has an incidence of three cases per 100,000 inhabitants in Brazil.

In general, Hodgkin lymphoma tumors appear in the neck and chest. In advanced stages, there may be manifestations in the abdomen and bone marrow. Lymphoma mainly affects adolescents and young adults, but it can also occur in the elderly.
In a geographical perspective, the regions that concentrate the most cases are the Southeast and South, followed by the Northeast, Central-West and North regions. A reference in the state in the treatment of this cancer, Inca treats around 70 patients with Hodgkin’s lymphoma annually.
