Brazilian women’s basketball meets rivals at AmeriCupW, aiming for Paris

The journey of the Brazilian women’s basketball team towards the 2024 Paris Olympics begins in July, at AmeriCupW, in Mexico, the modality’s Copa America. The first opponents of the group stage were defined by draw this Wednesday (10). In the draw for the keys, the team led by coach José Neto fell into Group A, along with the United States, Argentina, Venezuela and Cuba. At the end of the tournament, the top two teams guarantee a direct spot in the 2024 World Pre-Olympics.

To end the group, the traditional Cuban team, which has been recovering its competitive basketball and always plays with great intensity. We have to face each game as a unique game to rank in the best possible position and advance in the competition. For that, we are going to do an excellent training stage and arrive prepared for this tough competition”designs José Neto, in testimony to the Brazilian Basketball Confederation (CBB).
The team seeks to overcome the frustration of having been left out of the Tokyo Games, which had not happened since 1992. In the last two editions of AmeriCupW, the Brazilians reached the podium with the bronze medal. The last of them secured the country in the Pre-Olympics in Bourges (France), but the team ended the dispute without victories.

The competition will bring together 10 teams, divided into two keys. IN Group B are Canada, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The selections compete among themselves, within their own groups from the 1st of July, within their own groups. The best four advance to the quarterfinals (1A x 4B, 2A x 3B, 3A x 2B, 4A x 1B), scheduled for July 7th. Those who qualify will play in the semifinals on the 8th and the title match will be on July 9th.
The champion and runner-up team will have direct places in the 2024 World Pre-Olympics. Those who place third and fourth in the AmeriCupW will advance to the Americas Pre-Olympics later this year. The regional tournament distributes two spots for the World Pre-Olympic.
Ranking for Paris 2024
The Olympics will bring together only 12 women’s teams. Two vacancies are already defined: one for the United States, champion of the 2022 World Cup, and another for France, as the host country. The remaining places will be distributed in the continental qualifying tournaments. There will be two four-team tournaments in both Asia and the Americas, and one six-team tournament in Africa. The champions and runners-up of each competition are guaranteed in the Pre-Olympics.
Altogether, the Pre-Olympics will bring together 16 teams from all continents. There will be four tournaments with four countries each. In the end, the top three finish off the last spots for Paris.
