Botafogo side reveals he was approached to participate in a scheme

Left-back Marçal, from Botafogo, revealed that he was approached by social networks to participate in a betting scheme. The player said he was approached last season for a match-fixing case and promptly rejected the proposal. He made the revelation on Thursday (11), after Botafogo’s victory over Corinthians, in the Brasileirão.
“In my case, for example, it was last year against Flamengo that I took a card for a complaint. Then I received a message on Instagram saying: ‘Gee, Marçal, taking a card for a complaint? do you think?’. I gave an answer that could not be shown on television. And I never had contact again”, he revealed.
He regretted the cases of manipulation of results revealed in recent weeks by an investigation by the Public Ministry of Goiás. “All this is very sad. It ends up affecting the Brazilian Championship. It has negative visibility. It is happening to players who did not need it. This depends a lot on the character of the player. That there is the necessary punishment and that others who try or who imagine they can do it So, think twice before doing it (part of the scheme).”
“We know that being a football player is very difficult. Do you know how difficult it is to become a professional, in a big team, in a Serie A club. And after all this struggle, do you tarnish your career because of a scheme? I guess? this is ridiculous,” added the winger.
Marçal encouraged other players to do the same as he did, rejecting any offers from punters. “I hope that people can respond in kind and also show it to the police. If (a bettor) makes the invitation, and you say ‘no’, he is certainly insisting on so many others. And maybe another one will say yes, either for a reason bad situation at the club or financial problem. Those players who were caught in this type of scheme, that serve as a lesson for others and that we can have a clean championship.”
