The former player of the Brazilian women’s volleyball team, Ana Paula Borgo aged 29, died of stomach cancer, diagnosed eight months ago. The news of the death was posted on the social network of the athlete’s mother, Debora Borgo, on the afternoon of this Thursday (11). The opposite team left the courts in September last year, after discovering the tumor during medical examinations at the Barueri club, which signed her for the 2022/23 Superliga. Since then, Paula Borgo has been treated against the disease.
Born in Barueri (SP), the athlete was a silver medalist at the 2019 League of Nations, in Nanjing (China) under the command of Zé Roberto Guimarães, and was part of the team that won the Pre-Olympics for the Tokyo Games. Before arriving at Barueri, Paula Borgo defended clubs abroad, such as the Italian Bergamo and the Turkish Kale and Nilufer. The last club she played for in Brazil before pursuing an international career was Fluminense.
In a note of regret, the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) sympathized with the family and expressed “Deep condolences for the player’s passing” And highlighted: “she was a great talent in national volleyball and defended the Brazilian team in important competitions such as the League of Nations and the Pan American Games”.
Barueri honored the athlete on social networks and thanked “to his fight and his legacy”.
The Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), also released a note of regret, in which it highlighted the importance of the athlete who defended the green and yellow jersey: “has remarkable passages through the youth and adult categories of the Brazilian women’s volleyball team”. Several other clubs and entities mourned the early death of the athlete, including the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), Praia Clube, Fluminense and Osasco.
Last Tuesday (9), Paula Borgo even posted a touching message on her Instagram account, directed at her husband Carlos. In the post, the athlete remembered the date of the wedding anniversary that she could not celebrate last week, due to the illness.
“Our day 5 passed and I was not well enough to talk. We spend day 5 in the hospital with you taking care of me and telling me how much you love me. I’ve seen reports of husbands who abandoned their wives when they got sick, Carlos was completely different, he just showed how much he loved me, showing that he really was the man God sent me”.
