The CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) reported that the delegation of the Brazilian Olympic team is safe in Morocco despite the earthquake that shook the country this Friday (8).

In a statement, the organization said that “the athletes and members of the technical committee felt the tremor and left their rooms at the hotel in the city of Fez.”

For safety, everyone was taken to the hotel pool and returned to their rooms an hour after the shock.

The Olympic team traveled to the country for two friendlies against the local team. In the first, they lost 1-0 on Thursday (7). The second was scheduled for Monday (11) and, according to the CBF, it is maintained.

According to information from the AFP agency, the tremor occurred 71 kilometers southwest of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5 kilometers, at 11:11 pm local time (7:11 pm Brasília time).

Videos shared on social media show debris falling into narrow alleys and objects being knocked off shelves.

The USGS PAGER system, which provides preliminary assessments of the impact of earthquakes, issued an orange alert for economic losses, estimating that significant damage is likely, as well as a yellow alert for possible earthquake-related fatalities.

“People in this region live in structures that are highly vulnerable to earthquakes,” the USGS said.

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (CSEM), a scientific organization specializing in seismic activity in the Mediterranean region, estimated the magnitude of the earthquake at 7.

Morocco frequently experiences earthquakes in its northern region due to its location between the African and Eurasian plates.

In 2004, at least 628 people died and 926 were injured when an earthquake hit Alhucemas, in the northeast of the country.

In 1980, the earthquake in El Asnam, Algeria, with a magnitude of 7.3, was one of the most destructive earthquakes in contemporary history. It resulted in the deaths of 2,500 people and left at least 300,000 people homeless.
