The Brazilian government invited Venezuelan Admiral Remigio Ceballos to visit the country, one of the main military leaders who support the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro, and the target of sanctions from the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom and the European Union.

Ceballos, who has held several strategic positions at the top of the Armed Forces, is currently the country’s Minister of the Interior, and will play a key role in ensuring the security of the presidential elections scheduled for 2024.

He received an invitation signed by the Brazilian Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, to participate in Belém on August 7 in a preparatory meeting for the Amazon Summit, which will take place in the following days in the capital of Pará.

“The objective of the meeting will be to deepen the dialogue between the high authorities in the area of public security of the Amazonian countries that are members of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO)”, says the invitation sent by Dino.

In September 2019, the US Treasury Department included Ceballos and four other Venezuelan government officials on a list of people with assets blocked in the country, for “acting on behalf of the oppressive Maduro regime, which continues to promote egregious levels of corruption and human rights abuses”.

Before, the EU and Canada had already expressed themselves in this way. A year later, in December 2020, it was the UK’s turn to do the same.
