The women’s volleyball team scored a capital victory over current champion Italy in the League of Nations, in Bangkok (Thailand), Brazil’s tormentor in last year’s final. After losing, the Brazilians sought a tie and went ahead on the scoreboard. However, the Italians equalized again and the definition of the game went to the break. But it really was Brazil’s day, which prevailed once again, sealing the triumph by 3 sets to 2, after 2h30 of a very hard fight.

The team returns to the court at 7 am (Brasília time) this Thursday (29), against Canada, for the second game of the third and last week of the League’s qualifying phase. The country seeks the unprecedented title in the competition, after three runners-up in a row. With today’s triumph, the team rose to third place in the overall standings, with seven wins and two defeats. Poland tops the table, followed by the United States. Italy, on the other hand, fell to eighth position.

The League brings together the 12 teams best ranked by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). The eight best placed in the qualifying phase advance to the quarterfinals. Detail: the United States already have a guaranteed spot in the quarterfinals, as they are the hosts of the final phase (from 12 to 16 July).

Nations League games also add points to the FIVB world ranking, one of the parameters in the race for an Olympic berth at the Paris 2024 Games.
