Botafogo beats Fluminense in a six-goal game at Cariocão

Even with the elastic victory, Fogão depends on a defeat or draw by Vasco to continue in the state competition

O Botafogo achieved a great victory over Fluminense 4-2, this Sunday (3), for the Campeonato Carioca. Marlon Freitas (2), Raí and Urso scored Alvinegro’s goals, while Lelê and John Kennedy scored for Tricolor.

Despite the result, Team de Guerreiros has a guaranteed place in the state semifinal, but is waiting for the Vasco and Nova Iguaçu games to find out who their opponent will be. On the other hand, Glorioso beats Cruz-Maltino to dream of a place in the decisive phase of Carioca.

Electrifying game

In an electrifying first stage, Botafogo opened the scoring just two minutes into the game with Marlon Freitas taking advantage of a cross in the area and releasing a left-footed bomb to fill the net. Alvinegro extended the score with Raí, but Fluminense discounted Glorioso’s advantage with Lelê, who scored his sixth goal in the Campeonato Carioca.

Despite a tepid start to the second half, Fluminense and Botafogo produced an electrifying end. In the 34th minute, John Kennedy suffered a penalty and converted with a dig against Gatito Fernández. But Alvinegro responded in kind with André committing a penalty on Kauê and being sent off. Marlon Freitas converted and gave Glorioso the advantage. In stoppage time, Urso received a cross from the left, won a split with Marcelo and gave final results to the duel.

Next appointment

On Wednesday (6), Botafogo hosts RB Bragantino in the first game of the third phase of the Libertadores. On the other hand, Fluminense will only return to the field next week in the semifinals of the Campeonato Carioca.
