Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) stated on Monday night (25) that it is necessary to “give value” to freedom. He spoke briefly during the awarding of the title of São Paulo citizen to former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro (PL). The event was held at Theatro Municipal, in São Paulo.

The statement also comes after the release of videos by the North American newspaper The New York Timeswhich show that the former president stayed at the Hungarian embassy, in Brasília, after having his passport seized by the Federal Police.

“We went through difficult times and there were many, we continue to go through them, but the family is the basis of society,” said Bolsonaro. “There are certain things that you only appreciate after you lose them. My father said: ‘One is water from the well, the other is great love and our freedom’. I believe in determination, in resilience, in the learning we have had over the last few years to distinguish what is right and what is wrong. And also in the wisdom that we must have to face these challenges,” he added.

The tribute to Michelle, proposed by councilor Rinaldi Digilio (União Brasil) and approved by the Chamber of Councilors in November, was questioned in court. On the 20th, the São Paulo Court of Justice rejected the request by federal deputy Erika Hilton (Psol-SP) to block the tribute to the former first lady.

However, two days later, the ceremony was banned by the Court, on the grounds that using the Municipal Theater to honor Michelle would entail a “serious risk of misuse of the public good”. After the decision, Digilio stated that he took out a bank loan of R$100,000 to cover the rent for the Municipal Theater.

During her speech, Michelle highlighted Bolsonaro’s tenure as President. “Brazil will once again be governed by good people”, highlighted the former first lady. Michelle stated that the Lula government discontinued volunteering actions carried out by her during the Bolsonaro administration. “I will continue working and fulfilling my purpose”, highlighted.

The ceremony was attended by Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB); the president of the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo (Alesp), André do Prado (PL); of the vice-governor of the Federal District, Celina Leão (PP).
