Former football player from Amapa Ubiratan Silva do Espírito Santo, better known as Bira, is honored by the Macapá City Hall with a 2-meter statue, which will be set inside the new Glicério Marques Complex, on the Leopoldo Machado stretch.
According to the mayor of Macapá, Dr. Furlan, this is a way of honoring such a beloved player who has accumulated several titles throughout his career. “This is a historic rescue. Bira was very famous, multi-champion in Pará, Brazilian champion for Internacional and we need to value the people here in Amapá who build and leave a legacy for us. In this tribute there is a QR Code for people to know Bira.”
Bira’s brother, also a former player Aldo, was present during the event and spoke about the family’s feeling at receiving the honor. “I am speechless, because the mayor had a good idea of honoring Bira. He did everything for Amapá, he was undefeated Brazilian champion for Internacional, he was a ball boy at the Glicério Marques stadium and became a player. He has a great story. It’s a great emotion ”, he said.
During the event, the service order was signed to start the fourth phase of the complex’s works. At this time, funds from the Municipal Treasury will be used and the administrative building, bleachers, changing rooms and painting of the wall and fence will be built.
“We had three stages that benefited from federal amendments and the City Hall has contributed through rebalancing and readjustments, as we had many increases in civil construction and we had to contribute more money to continue with the works of Glicério Marques, which is already advanced”, said the municipal secretary of Works, Cássio Cruz.
Honoree’s story
Bira began his career at Sport Clube Macapá, won titles in Amapa and accepted an invitation to play in Belém, for Paysandu, in the 1976 season and lifted the Parazão cup that year.
In May 1977, Bira was hired by Remo, with the mission of filling the gap left by Alcino. In the blue team he scored 115 goals and won the title of the Paraense Championship in the years 1977, 1978 and 1979 and in May 2020, he was the center forward elected for the dream team.
In 1979, he went to Internacional, where he earned the nickname Bira Burro, for having turned down Flamengo, which was considered a team with greater projection. In the colorado team, the amapaense was Brazilian champion in 1979 and was part of the squad of the vice-championship of the 1980 Libertadores Cup and the 1981 gaucho title.
Bira also played for Atlético and did not go unnoticed there, the player won the state title in 1982. Before, in 1980, he played for Universidad de Guadalajara and in 1985 and 1986 he defended the colors of Chivas Guadalajara, both from Mexico.
The amapaense began a coaching career in 1989, initially at Vila Nova de Castanhal. Afterwards, he was ahead of Pinheirense, Sport Belém, Tuna Luso, Paysandu, Bragantino, Castanhal, Remo, Amapá, São José (AP) and Ypiranga (AP). In addition, Bira was a sports commentator.
In January 2020, Bira discovered that he had liver cancer and started treatment, with the help of Remo. In September of the same year he ended up dying as a result of the disease.
