Manaus (AM) – Jovem Bilíngue classes, a project that now offers English language teaching to a thousand students in the 1st year of Regular High School, in the state public network, began this Monday (26). The project is coordinated by the State Department of Education (Seduc) and is another initiative to increase the teaching of a second language in the state network. In 2024, the offer of a second language to students in the State grew by 34%, totaling more than 7 thousand recipients.

In bilingual education, the second language is not just approached as another subject in the student’s curriculum, but is taught in more depth, preparing Amazonian students for the job market and entry into a university at the end of the period. school.

“This is a unique opportunity for these students and we continue working to expand the offer even further. In this way, we contribute to paving a promising future for these students. I have no doubt that this will make a difference when they enter the job market”,

The Government of Amazonas has been working to establish partnerships with private institutions and consulates with the aim of expanding the development of a second language by students in the public education network and the expectation is that, soon, new vacancies will be offered.

The Secretary of Education, Arlete Mendonça highlighted that the initiative is a unique opportunity for students in the state education network. “We know that only through education can we transform lives and being able to see the brightness, joy and desire to study a second language in these students’ eyes is very rewarding. We are very happy to be able to provide, through the State government, through Governor Wilson Lima, this opportunity.”

The project

The Jovem Bilíngue project offers scholarships at private institutions for the English Language course. Students who study in the morning will take the English course from 2pm to 5pm; and those who study in the afternoon will study the other language, from 8 am to 11 am. Classes will last three years and will take place every Monday.

The enrolled students met the basic requirements set out in the notice, including being at least 14 years old and attending the 1st year of Regular High School. Furthermore, the thousand vacancies were filled, including students who have a Single Registry (CadÚnico) and also those with a disability.

Student Luiz Carlos, 15 years old, who is in his first year of high school, highlighted his satisfaction in being part of the first class of the project.

“I always wanted to do English, but I never got a good course like that. I was just waiting for the opportunity. English is important for many things, if I want to do an exchange or job elsewhere, I can go. I will already know their language”,

explained.

Bilingual teaching

In addition to the Jovem Bilíngue project, the state network offers a second language (Portuguese-English, Portuguese-Spanish, Portuguese-French and Portuguese-Japanese) in 10 full-time schools benefiting 6,400 students. With the thousand recipients of Jovem Bilíngue, the State serves approximately 7,400 students.

Exchange

In February, at the opening of the 2024 School Year, Wilson Lima announced that students studying a second language in the state public network will be selected to go on exchange. The project under preparation will be developed in partnership with consulates and other institutions.
