The online betting site Betano bought the naming rights for the Brazilian Championship. The information, not yet confirmed by the CBF, was released by Ge.com.

The value of the agreement should exceed the current R$50 million paid by wholesaler Assaí in the last annual contract renewal. The company has been sponsoring the Nacional since 2018.

Betano already has the naming rights for Série B of the Brazilian Championship and the Copa do Brasil. Furthermore, it sponsors Atlético-MG and has already printed its name on the Fluminense t-shirt.

The agreement comes at a time when betting houses are undergoing regulation in Brazil. At the end of 2023, the government sanctioned a bill regulating the sector, which until then operated in a kind of limbo, as gambling is prohibited in Brazil.

The project provides for a 12% tax rate on the betting houses’ revenue, minus the payment of prizes. Bettors must pay 15% per year when the amount received is above R$2,112.

The government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) also created, in January, the Secretariat of Prizes and Bets, which will be responsible for regulating and monitoring the betting and online gaming market.

The PT’s management is also considering creating a specific domain, ‘.bet’, for companies in the sector. The measure aims to help bettors identify regular betting houses in the country.

The profusion of online sports betting sites in Brazil was the subject of a series of reports by Sheet Bets in Brazil. The X-ray showed the scope of this type of practice, the social and economic impacts with the spread of online gambling, such as risks with addictions among minors, in addition to business interests and cases under investigation.

Among the main national tournaments in the world, only the Portuguese Championship sold naming rights to a sports betting company, Clicbet.
