Australians dominate the surf stage at Bells Beach – 04/14/2023 – Na Pinta do Surfe

The Bells Beach stage took place in medium waves and was dominated by the Australians. In the women’s semifinal there were 4 athletes and in the men’s final 2 athletes, all of them Australian.

The stage title went to Ethan Ewing and Tyler Wright.

Ethan surfed at home and with a polished and competitive surf, he advanced in his heats without giving his opponents a chance. With the title of the stage Ethan took the 4th position in the ranking.

Even losing in the round of 16, Brazilian João Chianca took the lead in the ranking. João has had an incredible year and seems to have adapted to the circuit. It’s great to see a Brazilian who just arrived on the world circuit reach this position. João deserves it because he works a lot, he’s a nice boy and he’s happy with life. It brings with it not only top-notch surfing, but also the real spirit of surfing.

This stage generated some discussions about the grades applied and the main disagreement came in the quarterfinals between Filipe Toledo and Jackson Baker. With little time to finish the heat, the Australian caught a wave and scored a 9. The problem is that in comparison with other waves it was clear that this wave was overrated. With that, Filipe needed a 6.91 to turn the battery. In the final seconds, Filipe got a wave and surfed everything the wave offered. The note took too long to come out, there was time for Filipe to return to the Bells staircase where he arrived indignant with the note given to the Australian.

He complained and insisted on looking at the camera and saying in English: Nine? Nine?

After a long wait the note 7 appeared and Filipe ended up turning the battery, did the pressure have an effect?

Relieved but still very uncomfortable, he made a point of turning towards the judges and applauding, he looked at the camera and said: Keep trying.

The WSL does an excellent job with many hits and boosting surfing and brand image. Care must be taken, especially in the judgment criteria, there cannot be such a large space for this type of discussion.

I’m sure there was an internal conversation after the incident and they are looking to minimize problems like this.

In the female category, Tyler Wright was the champion and presented the victory to his brother Owen Wright, who retired at the same stage.

Tyler occupies the second position of the ranking.

The Bells Trophy is beautiful and has the particularity of having a bell that rings for real.

Every professional surfer dreams of lifting and swinging that trophy. When the winners rang the bells it showed who the champions were, but they also rang as a warning to the competitors, as the next stage will be in Margareth River between the 20th and 30th of April and will be the last stage before the first cut of the year. So get ready, it will certainly be a disputed and exciting stage.
