The “Meeting BASA” – Impulsing Parathletics in the Amazon, a free event promoted by the Associação Paradesportiva do Norte (APAN) with funding from the Banco da Amazônia (BASA), took place last weekend, with an informative panel on the subject and a round of conversations with health experts and in the afternoon, practical workshops aimed at athletes, parents and physical education students with about 50 people.

The podium, on the other hand, was in the challenge format, with athletes competing with each other, with all classes and age groups. The exceptions were for the long jump event, which awarded according to the Under 14, Under 17, Under 20 and Adult categories, and the Under 14 category events, as these athletes are still in their initiation stages.

The 28-year-old wheelchair user Keven Whesley participated in a race for the first time and says he was surprised by the result in the 200m dash even though he came in 10th place, with 4 minutes, 48 seconds and 7 thousandths.

“Each goal was something I overcame and a movie that played in my head. It looked like it wasn’t going to end. Then I continued little by little until I reached the end. I almost didn’t finish, but I did it. It was my overcoming. I put my face in the inscription and came. This first participation was just a test. In a few years, we’ll see what happens.”

he said.

During almost 4 hours of competition, emotion spoke louder and took care of many para-athletes. Since 2020, the visually impaired Camili Guedes, 20, has been training alongside her guide Aricélio Ramos, 30. In three years of partnership, the duo has competed inside and outside the state. Currently, they have intensified training in order to evolve more and more. At the BASA Meeting, Guedes and Ramos stood out by winning 1st place in the 400m and 1500m events.

“It was wonderful to be participating in the tests and thank God beating our time. I am very happy about it. I say it’s very good for your health and to keep in shape and reach your goals. Because sometimes we get overwhelmed by our own time, so I say it’s for everyone. Try it. We are always here and we will be very happy to receive everyone in training, in competitions”,

declared the sprinter.

Guide Aricélio Ramos reinforces that partnership makes all the difference. “We’re big friends. We race, we train, we race, all together. We travel, train, that’s the routine. Thank God we were able to maintain our result. Our best was in São Paulo in the 400m and we ran aiming for that time to stay in the ranking. We couldn’t download it, but we didn’t have bad weather either. We kept 1 minute and 10 seconds. It was really good,” he said.

For the president of APAN, Thaís Castro, seeing so many people involved in the event and the financial incentive of the public power for this cause means the realization of a dream.

“We fought a lot. We had been trying to promote an event of this type for a few years and now with this funding from Banco da Amazônia and despite the short time we had to organize it, we managed to get good publicity. It is a tremendous responsibility that we receive. A great confidence that they deposited in our project. For the first time, there is a project of this level for the Amazon and it was the only one for para-athletics approved in the public notice. So, we will show that we have achieved results and managed to mobilize people to encourage growth in the practice of parasports”,

stated.

Due to the environmental contribution, requested in BASA’s sponsorship announcement, participants needed to take at least 2 pet bottles to be sent for recycling. A way to encourage local sports and also to make people aware of caring for the environment.
