Former Argentine president Mauricio Macri will be a candidate for vice-president of Boca Juniors in the club’s next elections, on December 2, Xeneize opposition leaders announced this Wednesday (8).

“We’ve been talking for some time. Finally, he decided to join me on the ticket,” declared Andrés Ibarra, candidate for president of Boca for the opposition, on Radio 10 in Buenos Aires.

Macri, 64, was president of Boca Juniors for 12 years, between 1995 and 2007, before entering politics to become mayor of Buenos Aires twice (2007-2015) and president of Argentina between 2015 and 2019.

During Macri’s management, Boca won six national titles – between 1998 and 2006 –, four Copa Libertadores (2000, 2001, 2003 and 2007) and two World Cups (2000 and 2003).

The announcement of Macri’s return to Xeneize politics comes days after the Argentine team’s defeat to Fluminense (2-1) in the Libertadores final, at Maracanã.

Boca Juniors is chaired by Jorge Ameal, but professional football is led by the club’s vice-president and idol, Juan Román Riquelme, who has not had a good relationship with Macri since the time he was a team player and the politician was its president. .

In recent days, as a political leader opposing the government of Peronist Alberto Fernández, Macri has been actively supporting the candidacy of ultra-rightist Javier Milei for the presidency of Argentina.

In the second round, which will take place on November 19, Milei will face Economy Minister Sergio Massa, a longtime friend of Riquelme.
