Amom Mandel was the first parliamentarian to make his ASD diagnosis public

Manaus (AM) — After the installation of the permanent committees of the Chamber of Deputies, last Wednesday (6), the youngest federal deputy from Amazonas, Amom Mandel (Cidadania-AM), became a full member of the Health Committee in the House. The parliamentarian, the first to make public the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), entered the collegiate with the mission of discussing and guaranteeing treatment rights for people in this group and others with special needs.

The parliamentarian is also a member of two other main committees of the Chamber: Environment and Sustainable Development (CMADS) and Foreign Relations and National Defense (CREDN). In addition, Mandel will be a substitute on the committees for the Defense of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the Amazon and Original and Traditional Peoples (CPOVOS).

Actions in the first year

In his first year in office, within CMADS, one of the most popular committees in the Legislative House, Amom became rapporteur for the National Policy for Territorial and Environmental Management of Indigenous Lands (PNGATI), important for guaranteeing and promoting protection, recovery, the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in indigenous lands and territories.

PL No. 3,889/2023, which establishes rules to protect and encourage afforestation and urban landscape, was another proposal that advanced within the commission. Within the text, Mandel brought a change in legislation to control the installation of overhead electricity meters, with the aim of avoiding unnecessary cutting of trees in cities throughout Brazil.

The project was added to an existing one, authored by the then president of the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Natural Resources (Ibama), which established the National Urban Afforestation Policy and created the National Information System on Urban Afforestation.

At CREDN, he was appointed rapporteur of the Escazú Agreement, an international treaty with legislative, regulatory and administrative measures aimed at the transparency of information related to the environment, guaranteeing the safety of environmental activists, encouraging social engagement in the environmental agenda, among other points .
