The Brazilian ambassador to Spain, Orlando Leite Ribeiro, met this Friday (26th), in Madrid, with Javier Tebas, president of La Liga, responsible for the Spanish Championship. In a joint note, they stated that “there is no place, in the contemporary world, for racist acts”. The meeting took place after yet another case of racism against Real Madrid striker Vinicius Júnior. Last Sunday (21), the Brazilian was offended by Valencia fans, in the duel between the teams.

“The Embassy of Brazil and La Liga strongly condemn any racist manifestation and undertake to continue fighting against this scourge that affects sport and compromises the image of Spain, a welcoming country where sportsmen of all origins, creeds and ethnicities can prosper” , says the statement, which also asks the authorities to “act to exemplary identify and punish offenders, sending a clear message that racist and xenophobic manifestations will not be tolerated”.

Last Sunday, after Vinicius Júnior manifested himself on social networks about another case of racism in the Spanish Championship, Tebas responded by saying that the striker should “inform himself” before criticizing the event. The Brazilian then demanded “actions and punishments” from the manager, who countered by denying that Spain or La Liga were racist. Last Thursday, however, Thebes retreated. In a press conference, he praised the player and stated that he would even support Vini Jr. decided to leave the field in case of new offenses.

The president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, was also with Orlando Leite Ribeiro this Friday. According to the note released by the organization, the director “reinforced the message of zero tolerance against racism” and spoke to the Brazilian ambassador about the campaign “Racists, outside football”, which has been carried out in stadiums, in which players, referees and commissions technicians make the “stop” gesture, with an outstretched hand, symbolizing the rejection of racism and xenophobia.

Earlier this week, the RFEF annulled the red card that Vinicius Júnior received in stoppage time for last Sunday’s match, when he hit the face of an opponent who held him back with a tie during the confusion. The federation’s Competition Committee also punished Valencia with five games without an audience in the sector of the Mestalla Stadium where the racist fans were and fined the club 45,000 euros (R$ 241,000). This Friday, however, the Appeal Committee decided to reduce the sentence to three matches and the fine to 27,000 euros (R$ 144,000).
