The newcomer to the competition, Wanna Brito, took the opportunity to further mark her sporting career in 2023. She won a gold medal in the shot put with a mark of 7.36m in the F32 class (people with cerebral palsy) and broke the competition record, which previously belonged to Colombian Nhora Medina, with 6.77m. “It’s my debut in Parapan and I’ve already won my first gold and I’m very happy and grateful. The gold is ours, from Brazil, from Amapá”he said after winning the medal.
The para-athlete from Amapá is world runner-up in the shot put in the F32 class, for athletes with cerebral palsy. Wanna recently broke the Americas record in the club throw and shot put at the Paralympic Athletics Circuit, in São Paulo. She was also part of the Brazilian delegation at the Grand Prix Marrakesh 2023, where she won a gold and a silver medal.
Another Amapá native who was part of the Brazilian delegation and took the Parapan podium was the para-athlete Leylianne Santos, who won a bronze medal in taekwondo in the K44 category, up to 65 kg. He beat Colombian Yerly Martinez after a draw, which defined the champion from Amapá after hitting her opponent’s vest more times.

This is the second time that Leylianne competes in the Parapan American Games. The first was in 2019, when she won bronze, in the K44 + 58kg category, in Lima, Peru. Amapá is currently the 5th best in the world in the K44 class; world runner-up in Istanbul, Turkey; silver medal at Pan Series III; bronze medals at the Parataekwondo Pan American Open and the Manchester Gran Prix.
