The vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), criticized Israel for the military action that left more than 100 dead during the delivery of humanitarian aid carried out this Thursday (29) in the Gaza Strip. More than 750 were injured according to local health authorities, controlled by Hamas. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged that its troops opened fire because they felt threatened, as part of the crowd looking for food reportedly went towards the soldiers.

However, the IDF said that its action was punctual, did not cause more than ten deaths and claimed that the rest of the deaths occurred during the turmoil, when people were trampled and run over. In the social mediaAlckmin said he was “shocked” by the attack on Palestinian civilians “perpetrated by Israeli military forces.”

“I was absolutely shocked by the news of the attack on Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, carried out by Israeli military forces, which killed dozens of people and injured hundreds more. Obstructing individuals’ access to humanitarian aid is inconceivable from any perspective, and opening fire on civilians violates the most basic precepts of humanity,” said Alckmin this Friday (1st).

Earlier, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) classified the episode as a “carnage” when speaking at the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac). “Fighting for peace, as President Lula defends, is no longer an option, but an ethical imperative that must guide all efforts of the international community at this time. It is necessary to take the first step on the path to peace: immediate ceasefire, release of hostages and entry of humanitarian assistance”, highlighted Alckmin.

This Friday (1st), Itamaraty said that Israel’s military action against Palestinians who gathered to get food “does not have any ethical or legal limits”. Since the 18th, Lula has reinforced his criticism of the Israeli offensive in Gaza. He compared the Israeli reaction against Hamas to the extermination of Jews by Nazis.

In an interview with journalist Kennedy Alencar, on TV network, the president stated that Israel wants to “effectively wipe out the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip” and called the Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, a genocide. “What I want to say loud and clear is this: the Prime Minister of Israel is carrying out genocide against women and children. This is the historical data”, said the PT member on the 27th.
